What's new with The Black Rabbit Group?

Thu, Mar 11 2010

The Black Rabbit Group is the parent organization for all of my projects and companies including Phase 5 Designs, Ethan's Paper Products, Teen Entrepreneur and a few retired projects. The Black Rabbit Group is focused on expanding horizons this year. Because of the amazing team that surrounds me,  I am able to begin spending less and less time directly with Phase 5 Designs and our web and branding projects for our clients. While I am still the creative director behind it all, I will try to expand the entire Black Rabbit organization, not just that of Phase 5 Designs, which has been the workhorse for the past two years. It's not a matter of one company shrinking while another rises to the top, its more of growth for the entire organization.  Phase 5 Designs will continue to expand- I will just also help start other projects as well. The mission of the Black Rabbit Group is to establish a series of profitable and successful companies to serve the growing needs across the country and around the world.
Ten years ago, I started Ethan's Paper Products.  Two years ago, I launched Phase 5 Designs.  Now, I am ready to start more.

The first project (is not profit-driven at all, it's something else), which I am mostly excited for, should drop April/May of this year. I'll share more details later. Be sure to be on the company newsletter over at www.phase5designs.com.

P5D Short Shorts are coming soon!
American Apparel // Bright Green // P5D logo on the butt // $10 // will sell out fast

P5D Shirts are still in stock!

Teen Entrepreneur is still on sale at the SKHS Student Store and the Bethel Ave Book Store!

Q&A with Ethan Kalkwarf

Wed, Mar 03 2010

In your book, you talked about how you never wanted a pity sale.  Do you feel that your business is more successful due to no pity sales?  Was it hard at first not letting age stand in your way?

Thanks so much for your question.  If you have any more questions, do not hesitate to email them to press@phase5designs.com with "Question" in the subject line.

Yes, I believe we are a stronger company because since day one I have always had higher hurdles to jump because I started so young.  I started selling gift tags and today we build websites.  I know I have to prove to my clients that we have the experience and unmatched professionalism partnered with competitive pricing that their organization needs and deserves.  Once we begin the job, I don't have to try and "prove anything".  Our quality work, happy clients, return customers and lengthy list of testimonies shows for its self.

When I first began, I tried never to get a "pity sale" as I call it in my book.  I have always wanted to close a sale because the client needed the product, not because he/she felt obligated to buy.  As you know, I hired younger kids to sell for me because they had the "cute appeal", something that could help when closing the sale.  There is a fine line between an adult supporting a kid and a pity sale and I never wanted to cross it.

Remember, if you have any more questions, do not hesitate to email them to press@phase5designs.com with "Question" in the subject line.

I've put together a list of our favorite web apps here at Phase 5 Designs.  I encourage you to check them out! They are all free, easy to use and make the internet a whole lot better.  And most of them you never knew you needed it, until after you've started using it!

TeauDeux

If you're like me, you have a list for everything. My desk is covered in different types of lists, my white board and planner.  I bring them all together at TeauDeux.  TeuxDeux is a simple, designy, browser-based to-do app. It is so simple and easy to use.  Eaisily check off completed tasks and non-completed tasks automatically will be shifted over into the next day!

Fav4

If you're a social network junkie, Fav4 is the start page for you.  Set Fav4.org as your homepage and you will easily have links directly to your social network sites.  Choose from a variety of sites to set as your personal "fav 4!"

meebo

Are you tired of having a million different chat programs?  From AIM to MSN to Yahoo to Facebook, there are too many chat programs out there! meebo allows you to login to one chat and access all of your accounts! Talk to all of your friends and coworkers with ease.  You won't have to switch between browser tabs with meebo!

Grooveshark

Are you a music lover? Then you will LOVE Grooveshark!  Grooveshark is a free simple to use, yet stylish music database. Search by artist, album or song and play it for free! Try any song or any artist and Grooveshark will have it.

ReaditLaterList

Do you subscribe to multiple blogs? Maybe you bookmark good articles online during lunch at work to read them later...but you forget or lose the link! ReaditLaterList is the site for you! This easy to use online app allows you to bookmark blog postings and online articles to read later.  This tool easily integrates into your browser.

Dropbox

Stop paying to share files between multiple computers!  Put your files into your "Dropbox" (just another folder in your MyDocuments or Desktop) on one computer, and they'll be instantly available on any of your other computers that you've installed Dropbox on (Windows, Mac, and Linux too!)  You can even access your Dropbox files online! Share up to 2GB of memory for free with Dropbox!

Twitter

So you haven't joined the digital revolution yet?! Twitter is a microblogging website that is changing the way we communicate.  Update your followers with a 140 character status that can be synced with cell phones, Facebook, Myspace and other media outlets.  This is a great tool to get news at your fingertips and spread news fast about your organization, business or share life with your friends!
